In his words, “I was working a nine-to-five marketing job when a friend who had purchased a dental practice reached out for help with marketing. That was around 2015. We decided to focus on relationship-based marketing, getting to know the practice owner and showing patients what the experience would be like. The practice took off, leading to referrals, and before I knew it, we had six clients on a monthly retainer. I was earning four times what I made at my regular job. It didn’t take long to realize there was a genuine opportunity to scale.”

It’s the real-world application of this simple but powerful concept — relationship-based marketing — that gave Shane the traction he needed in a competitive marketplace.

The Safety Net That Paved the Way for Scaling

Financial security plays a pivotal role when taking a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. Shane wasn’t just winging it; he had a plan. He shares, “My wife and I had an agreement that I would go full-time with the agency once it was generating enough revenue to replace my nine-to-five income. Having that safety net made it easier to experiment, take risks, and offer something unique to clients without the crushing weight of financial uncertainty.”

The Current State and Future Vision

Fast forward to the present day, and Crimson Media is sitting at about $90,000 in monthly recurring revenue with around 80 clients. Shane divulges, “We’ve reached a concrete proof of concept, allowing us to raise our prices. Our goal is to provide a boutique experience while maintaining profitability. In the long run, we might even reduce the number of clients but increase our price points. This strategy ensures we can pay our team well and meet our quality standards.”

Shane’s Tips for Aspiring Agency Owners

  • Don’t Quit Your Day Job Yet: Use it as a safety net until you’re financially secure enough to focus solely on your agency.
  • Focus on Relationship-Based Marketing: Authenticity and transparency are key. Build genuine relationships with your clients for long-term success.
  • Quality Over Quantity: As your agency grows, consider moving towards fewer clients but at a higher price point to maintain the level of quality and attention each client deserves.
