How Alex Danner Grew a Fence & Deck Marketing Agency from $10K to $160K/Month

If you've ever wondered what it actually looks like to go from a one-man generalist agency to a focused, systemized, multiple seven-figure operation, Alex Danner's story is the one to study.

Alex is the founder of Fence and Deck Marketers, a niche digital marketing agency serving fencing and decking contractors across North America. He recently sat down with me on the Seven Figure Agency Podcast to walk through the full journey, from his early days as a software engineer to running a 26-person remote team with churn under 3% and most of his operations running without him.

Picking the Niche

Alex didn't overthink niche selection. He already had fence and deck clients in his generalist agency, liked the industry, and noticed it wasn't yet flooded with marketing agencies. So he went all in, on two niches at once, since fence and deck contractors naturally overlap and often refer each other.

The transition wasn't overnight. He kept his legacy clients while slowly shifting focus, letting the generalist side wind down naturally as the niche side gained momentum. In his words, he probably moved too slow, but it worked.

Getting the First Clients

Early on, Alex leaned on Facebook ads and referrals to land his first clients in the space. Neither produced explosive results, but they were enough to get traction. The real momentum shift came when he stopped trying to market his way in from behind a screen and started showing up in person.

Once he committed to industry events, booking booths, attending mixers, introducing himself to the people running the space, everything started to compound. He went from being an unknown internet marketer to a recognizable face that contractors trusted.

The Event Strategy That Changed Everything

Alex is an introvert by his own admission. Trade shows and booths were deeply uncomfortable for him. But he did it anyway, and it became one of the most important decisions he made for the business.

His approach at events is straightforward: give people a reason to come to the booth, identify the owners and decision makers in the crowd, have a real conversation, and book the next step before they walk away. He runs a hanging challenge at his booth, a spinning bar where contractors try to hold on for 100 seconds to win $100 cash, and it draws a crowd every time.

More importantly, at every event he's looking for the coaches, association leaders, and industry heavyweights he can connect with and invite onto his podcast.

The Podcast That Opens Every Door

Alex now has over 100 podcast episodes, and he credits it as one of the single biggest drivers of his agency's growth. The reason is simple: almost nobody says no to a podcast invite. It's a low-friction way to get one-on-one time with influential people in the industry, coaches, vendors, top contractors, and build real relationships in the process.

Those relationships have led to speaking opportunities, joint ventures, referrals, and direct clients. Many of the people he interviewed went on to send him business or open doors he never would have found through cold outreach.

Building the Team and Getting Out of Operations

At $160K MRR with 26 full-time remote team members, Alex has done the hard work of building a real organizational structure. The turning point was implementing EOS, the Entrepreneurial Operating System, which helped him identify where he was the bottleneck, build out department heads, and create a leadership team that runs the business without him in the weeds.

His operations manager Oxa has been with him since nearly the beginning and now handles the day-to-day entirely. Alex's role has shifted to high-level strategy, sales, and marketing, exactly where a founder's time should go at this stage.

Keeping Clients: Under 3% Churn

Alex's retention numbers are exceptional, churn consistently under 3%, hovering around 2% this year. He attributes it to a combination of delivering real results, training account managers to communicate clearly and respond quickly, and making clients feel genuinely cared for. He's started sending personalized gifts when clients hit milestones, and even picked up a $200 bottle of Scotch whisky for a client while on vacation in Scotland because he remembered what they liked.

The principle is simple: people stay when they feel like you actually care.

The One Piece of Advice

When asked what he'd tell an agency owner trying to get to the next level, Alex didn't hesitate. Stop getting in your own head. Find the people who are further along than you, doing the things you want to do, and just follow the playbook. Don't wait until it feels comfortable. Do it uncomfortable, and figure it out as you go.
