How I actually listen to podcasts (as an agency owner)
I host a podcast (the Seven Figure Agency Podcast) and I've recorded over 200 episodes. So I have an opinion on this.
Most agency owners listen to podcasts wrong. They put one on while doing dishes, retain nothing, feel productive, and learn nothing actionable. Here's a better system:
Curate ruthlessly. The podcasts on the list above earn their spot. Most agency podcasts don't. If a show spends 20 minutes on guest backstory before anything useful, that's 20 minutes you don't get back. Subscribe to fewer shows, listen to more episodes from the ones that actually pay off.
Listen at 1.5x or 2x. If the host can't make sense at 2x, they're padding. Most can. You'll get through twice the catalog with no comprehension loss.
Have one specific question you're trying to answer per session. “How do I get my first $10K month?” “How do I structure my onboarding?” “What does a $1M agency org chart look like?” Pick the question, then search the back catalog of these shows for episodes that match. Listening with a question is 5x more useful than listening for general inspiration.
Take notes on actions, not ideas. Every episode that lands should produce one specific change you'll make in the agency this week. If an episode produces zero actions, it was entertainment, not learning. Both are fine — just label them honestly.
Listen to operators, not to gurus. Anyone running an agency at the size you want to be at has more to teach you than anyone selling a course about it. The list above leans heavily toward operators for that reason.
One episode per week, applied. Same as books — fewer inputs, deeper application. The agencies in the SFA network that compound the fastest are the ones that learn slowly and execute fast.
